By the time I'd turned on the TV, the Jerry Sanduskyverdict had been announced and the news anchor and legal analyst were in mid-discussion. To my ears it sounded as if they'd said he was acquitted on 45 counts. Obviously, I'd misheard and soon realized that he'd been found guilty on the majority of the charges. But in that second when I thought that he was going to walk free, my heart sank. My stomach was nervous and sick. It was the kind of feeling, I would get when I was left alone with my father, who molested me when I was a little girl. |

As I sat thinking about what I wanted to say about the Trayvon Martin rally at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh yesterday, it struck me that the whole thing kind of reminded me of a funeral. There was the sadness and anger at a loved one being lost, especially one so young. There were tears and encouragement, and greetings, hugs and kisses among folks who had not seen each other in a while. And while at a funeral, the pastor might ask those who remain whether they've prepared themselves spiritually, to meet their maker, those who spoke at the rally essentially asked how are we going to make this rally different from countless others? |

"Thank You, Dad." I heard my son say those words to his father via the telephone. Even though, I wasn't privy to most of the remaining conversation, but I knew why my son had thanked his father. Manny (my son) and I had just had another of many discussions about the Trayvon Martin case. My son is 20-years-old and unlike some young folks his age, he can't give you one Lil Wayne lyric. When his sister and I teased him about growing a Rick Ross beard, he asked, "Who's that? |

First, you cry. At least that's what I felt like doing when I read that Pres. Barack Obama finally released his long-form birth certificate to quiet that small band of idiots so delusional, they had to invent a term for them, "birthers." Recently, while the President was doing his job trying to build the economy back up while keeping the government from shutting down, the "birthers" found a leader in a village idiot named Donald Trump. Trump, who's brain has obviously been effected by the chemicals he uses to acquire that unnatural organge glow and to hold his infamous comb over in place -- began breathing new life into the "birthers" reason for living. |

“About to fall asleep. A prayer. A pistol. 2 clips. Goodnight.” That was the final tweet of the night, Wednesday, fromShaun King, a young Atlanta pastor, who has decided to speak out against almost unspeakable crimes, he says were committed by his former pastor against children. After learning that the pastor’s alleged deeds had been covered up, Shaun, who had left that church to start his own congregation, took to Twitter and Facebook to bring the charges to light. His wife, Rai, did the same on her |

I've always been a fan of R. Kelly's talent, if not enamored with his lifestyle. Grown men tinkling on underage girls for their own sexual gratification -- allegedly, as Lindsay Lohan would say -- just doesn't sit well with me. But, as I've said, you can't deny his God-given talent. Now, when it comes to him as a person, well, I just stop at the talent. |

Goodbye Teena Marie. Now singing is what some people like Beyonce and Rihanna (kinda) do. SANGING is what amazingly gifted vocalists like Teena do. I was still in high school when her "Wild and Peaceful" album debuted with hits "I'm A Sucker For Your Love" with late iconic funk master Rick James and "Deja Vu" I loved the rap on"Square Biz",which incorporated the titles of some of her albums "Irons in the Fire" and "Wild and Peaceful". |

"Just be thankful for what you got Though you may not drive a great big cadillac. You may not have a car at all But remember brothers and sisters you can stillstand tall" For some reason that song by just popped into my head. Maybe it's because its Thanksgiving. Duh! Sometimes I swear Monica you don't have the sense God gave a goat. My mom used to say that but she called me Lynn not Monica. Anyway, the point is to be thankful for whatever it is that you have. Some have more and some have less, but most of us have SOMETHING, even though it may not be ALL the something you want. |

If girls are made of sugar and spice and everything nice, what are colored girls made of? Hardships, hardtimes and heartache? This past weekend, I saw Tyler Perry's take on Ntozake Shange's literary masterpiece"For Colored Girls whohave Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf." The title has been shortened, the pain has not. All the women in the film are either in the midst of pain, entering a new season of pain or just emerging from their most recent painful tenure. |

"Don't say a prayer for me now. Save it til the morning after." -- Duran Duran The Bible says that they wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength. Strength is what we're going to need now that theRepublican wavehas washed over America. Somehow the Repubs and their Tea Party cousins were able to zap too many of us with an amnesia gun, which wiped out all memory of the failed Republican policies that got the country into the dire straits it is in. Democrats, who fell off the message wagon and like Humpty Dumpty couldn't put the vision back together again ,are waking up with the regret of someone who can't believe what they did the night before. |
